Two contrary developments compete among the iF DESIGN AWARD 2021 awarded projects in the discipline Interior Architecture: a glance backwards at interior spaces from the 1970s or 1960s or even deeper into the real and imagined past, and an airy, contemporary and minimalist approach to architecture, with large apertures and clear lines. Natural materials are combined with steel and glass. Rather than competing with each other, these trends complete a vision of interior architecture in Europe, Asia and the Americas, in a time when hope for a sustainable future more in sync with nature exists alongside a nostalgic reimagining of simpler times. This crop of award-winning designs is fascinating in its local approach, while at the same time lending comfort through shared archetypes. Here too, the ascent of Asian studios is apparent and the overall quality is very high.
