From high-density urban centers to remote residential cabins, the nexus of this year's group of award-winning entries is site-specific architecture. Most of the projects were designed and built in connection with the natural environment. Oftentimes a dialogue ensues between the building and the site, be it in the center of an Asian city or located on a solitary place of nature. This year we also continue to see green architecture on the ascent, with many of the projects explicitly sustainable in their use of materials and construction techniques. Finally, many works reflect how essential time spent in and around one's own house has become, both together with family members and relaxing alone. Spaces for relaxing are more important than ever in a year dominated by the pandemic that forced many of us to shelter (and work) at home.
