Shenzhen Industrial Design Fair (SZIDF)

Chinese Design Growth @Shenzhen International Industrial Design Fair (SZIDF)

No other country looks back onto such a long and rich cultural history like China. Design always played a crucial part. Yet, there is also this preoccupied image of China as the culture of copying when it comes to design and engineering. Chinese companies and designers aim to eliminate this image and make China a major player in design. This can be best seen at the 6th Shenzhen International Industrial Design Fair (SZIDF) from 5 to 7 November, where many iF honored designs are exhibited and well-known designers and hosts like Hartmut Esslinger will attend. The SZIDF and the SZIDF Awards, established in 2015 and honoring the "best in best" innovations by the exhibitors, is THE industrial design highlight in Asia and is hosted by People's Government of Shenzhen Municipality. This year's theme: "Design Drives – Knowledge – Drives Design”.

iF CEO Ralph Wiegmann attends SZIDF as a judge and gives a keynote at the conference about finding uniqueness in design. He explains why China is growing to become a strong design and innovation powerhouse and what role Shenzhen plays as the next design centre: “As a "Smart Hardware Industry Silicon Valley", Shenzhen also provides unlimited possibilities for integrating "design thinking" into product innovation", he said.

Check out three reasons why Chinas design quality is growing:

  1. More and more Chinese companies begin to understand that design adds value to their products and that design helps to stand out from their competitors.
  2. The country will follow in the footsteps of Japan and Korea: First there was copying then improving and now there will be true originality!
  3. The government is doing more and more to support design innovation.

And exactly this is the case with the SZIDF.
