Stefan Behnisch

Stefan Behnisch is the Founder of Behnisch Architekten, an architects’ office with branch offices in Los Angeles, Boston and Munich. He studied philosophy at the Munich School of Philosophy, economics at Ludwig Maximilians University Munich and architecture at the University of Karlsruhe. After earning his diploma in 1987, he joined Behnisch & Partner, the office run by his father, Günter Behnisch, and founded the branch office Innenstadt in 1989. In 1991, this office became independent and, after changing its name several times, has now been known as Behnisch Architekten since 2005. Stefan has taught in Portsmouth, Nancy and Austin, among other places. He was a visiting professor at the Yale School of Architecture in New Haven, at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and at the University of New Mexico. In 2002, Stefan received the “Trophée Sommet de la Terre et Bâtiment” in France and the “Environmental Champion Award” in the USA in 2004. He also received the “Global Award for Sustainable Architecture” in 2007, a “Good Design, Category People” award in 2009 and the “Energy Performance + Architecture Award” in 2013.
