IFA has always regarded itself as a hotspot for technological trends in our kitchens, in the home and home entertainment. Voice control has found its way into all kinds of appliances and devices. Having touchscreens on kitchen appliances has become almost just as everyday as using an app for food management. With so many things being the same, what really counts for manufacturers and customers is a purist type of design that fits in with today' lifestyles, while offering a sense of individuality at the same time.
Digital technology, with AI and big data, continues to challenge us all and arouses our curiosity. We asked well-known manufacturers about what they will be presenting to the public as particularly innovative at the IFA 2018.
Anyone who wants to equip a new kitchen today can choose from between modular and built-in appliances from major suppliers, who feel committed to realizing a purist design concept and modern functionality. “The fusion of beautiful design with the latest technologies, while still preserving the essential essence of a product – that is the goal of LG SIGNATURE,” is how Song Dae-hyun, President of the LG Home Appliance & Air Solution division explains the concept. This company showcases its newest products in the Premium Series at this year's IFA. The LG SIGNATURE wine cabinet is equipped with an automatic lift function at the touch of a button to give you access to a maximum of 65 wine bottles stored within. White wine, red wine, Madeira and rosé all in one cabinet? Thanks to the innovative multi-temperature control, LG promises optimal storage conditions for all types of wine at the same time. Use the voice control feature to open the tinted glass door and to switch on the sparingly dosed interior light.
The new LG SIGNATURE high-end tumble dryer also offers intelligent functions. With a total capacity of 10 kilograms, it automatically adjusts to the amount of laundry actually loaded. The manufacturers have made life easy for the user and included a dryer condenser that automatically cleans itself. And if you are standing in front of the new LG SIGNATURE refrigerator-freezer combination with both hands full, voice control makes “open sesame” – something you wished for in your childhood – the real thing. In the meantime, many manufacturers have opted for doors without handles and incorporate an “auto-door-open function”. > IFA Hall 18 / 101 + Summer Garden / A 10
Bosch is a manufacturer who has achieved this in an impressive way with the
accent line carbon black for fitted kitchens, which will celebrate its
premiere at the IFA 2018. The elegant, rich black draws attention to the subtleties of the
controls of this series, whereby individual appliances can be freely combined with one another.
Harmony by way of skillful reduction was the goal behind the design.
“The most important stylistic element in art and design is not the color, but the interplay between light and shadow,” says Bosch Chief Designer Robert Sachon. The elegant black-glass front includes an operating ring made of brushed, stainless steel coated with DLC (diamond-like carbon) and the brushed, black-anodized metal handle. The accent line carbon black includes ovens, hobs, heat drawers, sous-vide drawers, extractor hoods, microwaves and fully automatic coffee makers in a single, range-wide design idiom. The selection also includes a fully integrated dishwasher and the Vario Style fridge-freezer combination in carbon black.
Bosch had already presented the Vario Style last year and has now also received the iF DESIGN AWARD 2018 for the first fridge-freezer combination with easy-to-replace colored door fronts. Pearl aubergine, pearl bronze, pearl green, pearl anthracite and light gray are the new colors. Altogether, there are now 24 colors to choose from for more personal style in a well-designed kitchen. Thanks to an attachment system with concealed brackets and magnets, the durable door fronts can be replaced in an instant without requiring the use of any tools. > IFA Hall 3.1 / 101
Refrigerators are now displaying an increasing amount of innovation on the inside as well, a development that most certainly made a positive impression on the iF DESIGN AWARD jury at the beginning of the year.
Liebherr has expanded its BluPerformance series by adding the side-by-side SBSes 8486, a freestanding fridge-freezer with six different temperature zones to perfectly store all your foods. Innovative BioFresh-Plus technology offers illuminated BioFresh drawers, which can be pulled out fully and are equipped with a convenient self-closing mechanism. The VarioSafe drawer offers the best overview and plenty of space for small-scale food items and can be adjusted to the right height as needed. Energy, time and effort are also saved by the flexible Fish & Seafood box, which can be set to a temperature of 0 °C or -2 °C, the NoFrost freezer and the automatic ice maker. In addition, wine enthusiasts will appreciate two independently adjustable wine cabinets in the temperature range of +5 °C to +20 °C. > IFA Hall 2.1 / 201
As for the BOSCH, LG and Samsung appliances, the fact that apps can now be used to control this fridge-freezer with the corresponding displays on the refrigerator door is no less important as part of the trend towards connectivity to be seen at the IFA 2018 in many different large and small appliances. Another trend also becomes evident at the show: manufacturers are now relying on greater flexibility in the kitchen. Divided cooking areas in one appliance make it possible to cook for a larger number of guests or to prepare two dishes separately but at the same time.
Samsung, for example, will feature its NV7000 Dual Cook Flex built-in oven at this year's show. Two hot-air fans make it possible to have two independent cooking chambers, separated by a removable cooking chamber divider, which looks much like a baking sheet. This means that it is possible to use only one cooking chamber, either at the top or the bottom, without transferring any odors or taste. Temperature, cooking time and operating mode can be set individually for each cooking chamber. The oven door is also divided in the middle as an additional energy-saving feature. Pyrolysis and steam-cleaning make the oven self-cleaning. The new NV7000 oven is now available in stainless steel, black stainless steel and black glass designs. > IFA Hall A, City Cube / 102 + Hall B, City Cube / 101
As far as small appliances are concerned, the big trends can be seen in the smaller details. WMF, for example, is presenting a new series of kitchen appliances in elegant metal shades for smaller sized households. The WMF KÜCHENminis® Serie (kitchen minis series) promises “healthy food, gentle preparation, downsizing and increased efficiency”, in keeping with the motto of “less is more”. The WMF KÜCHENminis® have been developed to save space, reduce the use of valuable resources and save energy. Intuitive operation and the possibility of preparing individual portions make this series the perfect choice for one or two-person households in particular. It currently consists of 23 appliances. For the IFA 2018, three appliances will also be available in the colors copper and graphite for the first time. > IFA Hall 6.1 / 102
A number of improvements were made on the WMF Ambient series, which was already launched in 2017 and aims to express style and elegance with its clean design made of matte Cromargan®. The WMF Ambient champagne and wine cooler is sure to be a real eyecatcher on any patio or terrace: two integrated LED light rings can be adjusted to three brightness levels with a light touch on the base and can replace a lantern for up to four hours. Simply put the ice pack into a freezer before using it. Batteries supply the power if there is no power outlet available.
WMF is also featuring innovative cooking technology. Sous-vide cooking (vacuum cooking) cooks foods gently in a vacuum-sealed pouch and water bath using the low-temperature method. It is possible to achieve the individually desired degree of doneness by precisely controlling the temperature in the smallest of units. With the WMF Lono Sous Vide Garer Pro (which, according to the manufacturer, will be available from mid-November), cooking becomes as transparent as glass, thanks to the six-liter BPA-free Tritan water tank with Cromargan® elements on the housing. The cooker is controlled by an LC display and the program also includes a slow-cook insert. > IFA Hall 6.1 / 102
The timeless metal shades of color already found in the kitchen area reflect the current heritage style and go hand in hand with the return to natural materials in product design. In the TV segment, for example, German manufacturer Loewe will be offering a special color combination to coincide with next year's Bauhaus anniversary.
At the IFA 2018, Loewe will showcase the 65-inch bild 5 Color Code, a special edition of the bild 5 OLED TV that has already won an iF DESIGN AWARD 2018. In collaboration with designer Bodo Sperlein, an extraordinary, warm palette of colors was created to match the oak base of the Loewe bild 5. At the same time, it subtly pays homage to the Bauhaus color theories with the three signature colors of Himalayan rosé, citrine yellow and fog blue. Thus, the television becomes a design object. The OLED image quality, which provides for natural image impressions, also stands for technological sophistication. Such additional modules as an 80-watt stereo sound system with a closed bass reflex speaker and the Loewe klang 5 system (270 watts) will satisfy even the most discerning tastes. The Loewe Digital Audio Link can connect the individual modules wirelessly to create a complete home entertainment system with room-filling sound effects. > IFA Hall 24 / 101-101a
Perfect sound is also one of the top priorities for the presentation of new products coming
from Harman, the audio specialist.
The Harman Kardon Citation wireless multi-room and multi-channel voice enabled audio system is the next generation of premium home audio systems. It combines pure and elegant design with innovative technology and user-optimized applications. The speakers feature the brand's signature industrial design accented with thoughtful elements, including elegant aluminum detailing. Winter gray or classic black wool fabric from Kvadrat, the European leader in acoustic textiles, puts the finishing touches on the refined and sleek look of the equipment. A high-resolution dynamic screen touch interface allows the easy, intuitive management of the system. For active voice control, Citation features the Google Assistant and comes with built-in Chromecast. The Citation speaker lineup features various options, including multiple countertop speaker options, a soundbar, powered subwoofer and a pair of tower speakers. To create a dynamic sound experience, the speakers can be used individually or as a powerful 5.1-channel surround sound system. > IFA Funkturm Indoor Ground / 100
With superior sound quality on a small scale, LG Electronics presents its new LG Q STYLUS, a mid-range smartphone with premium functions. DTS:X sound enables 3D surround sound when headphones are used. This smartphone primarily targets business travelers, who can use the intelligent stylus pen to write notes by hand and thus quickly record their spontaneous thoughts on the display. The borderless 6.2-inch FHD+ FullVision display delivers particularly bright colors for good screen visibility – ideal for working on a smartphone. > IFA Hall 18 / 101 + Summer Garden / A10
