The new iF top labels in the WORLD DESIGN INDEX (WDI)

The new iF top label recognises those designers who have consistently held leading positions in their field or region. Selection will depend on the type and number of iF Awards that a designer or team has won over the last five years. In fact, a team, studio or company has the chance to receive several iF top labels for excellence in different areas.

Criteria + Definitions

iF top labels in the iF WORLD DESIGN INDEX receive the most successful winners of the iF DESIGN AWARD.

The assessments are made on the basis of a points system, which awards 20 points for every iF award received and 100 points for each iF gold award.

Assignment of points

Points are awarded once per Creative Role (Manufacturer or Client + In-house design team or Design studio). If a prizewinner enters both roles (for example, manufacturer and in-house design team), he also receives the points for both roles.

The iF top labels are updated annually after the iF design awards ceremony. Then the results of the last 5 years of the competition will be used.

The number of iF top labels awarded is based on the number of winners in the group. For reasons of exclusivity, a maximum of 10% of the winners of a group should receive a label.

  • BEST OF - from 50 award winners
  • TOP 3 - from 50 award winners
  • TOP 10 - from 100 award winners
  • TOP 25 - from 250 award winners
  • TOP 50 - from 500 award winners
  • TOP 100 - from 1000 award winners

Mapping the leading designers of our time

Dow Jones, Nikkei and DAX are well-known stock market indices. Soon we will also have an index for consistently powerful, excellent and sustainable design – the iF WORLD DESIGN INDEX (iF WDI).

The iF WDI will present the world's most successful in-house design teams, the most reputed design studios and the top design-driven companies. This benchmarking and evaluation system will be divided into categories according to sectors and services, as well as by country or continent. The index will be compiled from iF award winners of the past five years.

The iF WDI will be an entirely new benchmarking and evaluation tool which documents and represents the most substantial and excellent achievements in design worldwide. It gives journalists, companies, designers, architects and design enthusiasts the opportunity to configure their own classifications (e.g. World’s top 10 bathroom designers or Germany's best design studios. The possibilities are endless.)
