Short interview with Jamy Yang

Can you please introduce yourselves briefly – who are you?

I’m Jamy Yang, founder and design director of YANG DESIGN and YANG HOUSE. When I studied in China, I received a full scholarship from the WK Foundation to go to Germany to complete the Master of Industrial Design at the Muthesius Academy. Then, I worked at the Siemens Design Headquarters in Munich.  From 2005 to 2015, YANG DESIGN, YANG DESIGN Museum and lifestyle brand YANG HOUSE were successively established. YANG DESIGN projects  cover cross many fields such as lifestyle, home appliances, vehicles, space installations and so on. “Can design change the society? “This has been a challenging issue that I have been committed into action!

What is your contribution in detail to the iF Design Marathon 2021?

The two things I would like to share in iF Design Marathon 2021 are the renovation plan for the YANG Design Museum and the newest launch of China Design Trends Report . One is to study the history of design, the other is to forecast the future of design.

Let’s take a look into the future: In your opinion, in which design discipline will be the biggest innovation?

In 2004, when I was working at the Siemens Design Headquarters in Munich, we were still trying to study the differences of physical button layout and brand genes on different brands of mobile phones. Just a few years later, in 2007, the first Apple smartphone launched, making the physical buttons completely disappear. The whole world has entered the era of digital civilization from the era of industrial civilization.

In the era of digital civilization, the essence and ultimate goal of digitization is to establish a complete simulation of the real physical world in the digital virtual world, and then maximize efficiency and cost reduction through the real-time interaction between the virtual digital world and the real physical world. This process will go on forever without doubt, and perhaps even one day, humans themselves will be digitized. This change for human beings is extremely profound, far greater than the change in the era of industrial civilization, it has brought impact on manufacturing, transportation, energy, agriculture, entertainment, education, finance, consumption and other fields, of course, also profoundly changed the design.

The background and trend of this era determines the development trend of industrial design. As a result, YANG DESIGN's future plans will change as the digital age evolves. The interaction of user experience between the real and virtual world, the small batch and flexibility of product manufacturing process, the exploration of innovative materials, and the design principle of sustainable development are all the key points that we pay attention in the future, and also there are innovation opportunities.
