On September 9, 2019, València was designated the World Design Capital of 2022 by the World Design Organization (WDO), an international non-profit organization that, since 1957, was established to promote the design profession.
València World Capital of Design 2022 seeks to turn design into a tool for social well-being and sustainable economic development. Design is the fundamental tool to improve people's quality of life, activate short-term innovation, and generate long-term systemic change in societies, solving very specific problems and challenges from the local level, and generating global solutions that can be applicable to other environments.
More than organizing a program of events, València World Capital of Design 2022 seeks to activate a process that integrates the whole of society, from citizens to private and public companies, through the academic and training fields. A process that allows the implementation of design strategies throughout the territory and in areas as broad as politics, education, urban planning, communication, tourism, innovation, culture or business.
València World Capital of Design 2022 aims to highlight the social relevance of design, promote its activity, and point out the value of this creative sector, by turning the perspective of design into the main agent of social change and urban innovation. It is about generating a whole series of initiatives that will project design beyond 2022, and generating a legacy capable of transcending and establishing design as a key asset of our social, cultural and economic networks.
It should be noted that the entire program of events of the World Design Capital Valencia 2022 will be structured around 6 theme areas, which will group a whole series of activities, conferences, exhibitions, initiatives or city interventions that will try to find solutions to the existing challenges posed in each area: Identity and Heritage; Design Education; Equality, Inclusion and Diversity; Health & Well-being; Environment & Sustainability; Economy and Innovation.
To highlight the value of our visual, graphic, cultural, architectural, urban, material and intangible heritage, as well as the identity of our design and what makes it unique. The identity that defines the Mediterranean, the direct heritage of the culture in which we grew up, in which we live, and the one that shapes our personality. The Mediterranean design that expresses its values and qualities.
Through the establishment of a program of activities and initiatives aimed to activate design in both public and private education, as well as in professional training. All this through the creation of an ecosystem made up of different design agents, and teaching processes with the ability to contribute to society. And the creation of a memorable experience for students, professors, teachers, universities, technical schools, research centers and companies, so that they can integrate design into their corporate strategies.
Through a whole program of activities that highlights the diversity of our design from a social perspective, in which spaces, products and services are designed by everyone and for everyone, regardless of gender, religion, age, abilities or social class, so that we can all live and enjoy our society on equal terms.
Highlighting all the proposals that improve people’s well-being and health, whether if through sports, lifestyle, mental or physical health, as well as other dimensions such as social well-being.
Highlighting the crucial importance of environmental design to address some of the most immediate challenges of our immediate future, such as the current context of climate emergency. Urban interventions, use of clean energies, green infrastructures, sustainable agriculture, waste management, local produce & commerce, or zero km. food supply.
To disseminate the importance of design as an engine to move towards a sustainable production model, and to promote policies aimed to incorporate design into the corporate strategies of our companies. Valencia World Capital of Design does not end in 2022, but it will be projected into the long term in time. In this sense, we understand the World Design Capital as the starting point of an ongoing project, which will be governed from the year 2023 onwards by a Foundation, whose main goal will be to materialize the process of change undertaken by the city, with design as the main backbone and transversal axis.
Let’s reunite again to embrace sustainability, design and creativity. Welcome to World Design Capital Valencia 2022
Valencia is the eighth city to be designated World Design Capital. The city of Valencia and, in general, the Valencia Region, is a land of creativity. The work of design professionals, architects, interior and graphic designers in Valencia over the last century, evidences an innate design culture that extends throughout the territory and that will be showcased to the world next year.
Ten districts, ten postcards, ten graphic designers show us Valencia’s most iconic neighborhoods with illustrations and colors, a campaign with which to greet each other between neighborhoods and make the city known internationally.
Typesqueimportan.com is established as a participatory platform to document, explore, disseminate and inspire, that aims to contribute to the conservation of Valencia’s local culture through the recovery of the city’s commercial signages.
"Ceramic DNA, designing the Mediterranean" is the first map of ceramicists of the Valencia Region, directed by Ana Illueca and launched by World Design Capital Valencia 2022, which aims to highlight the work and talent of professionals in ceramics who, with their work, are contributing to increase the value of design throughout the Valencia Region.
Collaboration, creativity and craftmanship are common languages to design and the different crafts present in the “Fallas”. This is our tribute for such an iconic festivity for the Valencian people.
