Short interview with Shirley Feng

Can you please introduce yourselves briefly – who are you?

Hello, I'm Shirley Feng. I'm currently a member of the 12th CPPCC of Guangdong Province, President of Shenzhen Industrial Design Profession Association (SIDA), and Founder of Sino-Finnish Design Park. Since I took charge of SIDA, we always uphold the belief of "let the world see China design". From introducing Shenzhen design to 100% Design London, a international breakthrough in China design, promoting shenzhen and Helsinki to become a pair of sister cities, building Sino-Finnish Design Park, introducing Shenzhen design institutions and manufacturing enterprises to IDSA annual conference in the United States, Florence Design Week in Italy, and Milan Design Week, to launching Shenzhen International Industrial Design Fair, we are always practicing the mission of "introduce our design to the world" to make China design visible to the whole world. With Chinese modern industrial design seeded in Shenzhen, we export Shenzhen’ s design development experience and model to the whole country, and build innovative design platforms in Hebei, Qingdao, Jiangxi and other provinces and cities.

From special regions to new areas, we define these cities of the future with our design, boost the innovative development of smart industries and bring China future design to the world through Xiongan New Area. Over these years, we’ ve also established strategic design cooperation with organizations from more than 30 advanced cities around the world. We organized the main venue of the National Mass Entrepreneurship and Innovation Week in Shenzhen, Goldreed Industrial Design Award, Fab 12 Conference, Shenzhen International Maker Week, UNLEASH Innovation Lab 2019, and many other high-end international events. We continue to promote the development of China design.

Let’s take a look into the future: In your opinion, in which design discipline
will be the biggest innovation?

I believe that the product design is bound to see great innovation opportunities with the emergence of "new consumption", "new life", and "new economy". The maturity of market economy, the scientific and technological development of 5G Internet of things, and the diversification of demand have led to new lifestyles. In turn, these continue to change our concepts in residence, consumption, travel, education, pension, security and so on. The fission of science and technology in the Internet era has gave birth to a new consumption era and accelerates the development of design. As the environment changes, the first thing to bear the brunt is the upgrading of design thinking. Innovation will create new consumption experiences and possibilities. Facing the challenge of the new consumption trend and consumer groups. Design is to create new products in accordance with new trends with new thinking, so as to meet the needs of personalized consumer groups.

Let’s get personal: What is of more interest to you – design history or future design? Please explain why.

Future design is of more interest to me. From the perspective of strategic resources, whoever takes the lead of industrial design will be the leader of new concepts, good products, and new manufacturing. Through the integration of industrial chains, innovation chains and technology chains, future design will become a common matter for the general public, connecting all aspects of society. In the era of the internet of all things, the whole city will become a huge design center. Everyone can be a designer to design a better life and a promising future.
