Day 11: Design Museum Everywhere

A New Form of Design Firm for Startups

In this week’s episode, we learn more about a new type of design firm for startups. Host Sam Aquillano is joined by Bret Recor, the Founder and Creative Director of award-winning design agency Box Clever. Bret chats about the process of this new hybrid model where Box Clever actually takes a stake in the companies that they work with, which allows them to be more of a partner to these companies. He shares more on how this approach looks different from the "Design for Hire" model. Later on in the show, they are joined by Jamison Pereira, Co-founder of Eddi, a new startup that is launching a sustainable soap dispenser for the modern home. Together they chat about collaborating during lockdown and the power of good design.

Short interview with Sam Aquillano

Can you please introduce yourselves briefly – who are you?

I’m Sam Aquillano, Founder and Executive Director of Design Museum Everywhere, a distributed museum with a mission to bring the transformative power of design everywhere. We like to say: design is everywhere, so are we. I’m also the host of our weekly podcast, Design is Everywhere. Prior to starting Design Museum Everywhere I was an industrial designer at Bose — and I’m proud to say I’ve earned a couple iF awards over the years!

What is so special about your project / your business, design wise?

Design Museum Everywhere is a new kind a museum — we’re redefining what it means to be a museum in the 21st century. We are online, nomadic, and accessible to all. Instead of a single museum location in one place, we pop-up everywhere, in places where people already go. Whether in a gallery, retail environment, public space, office, lobby, or online, you can find our events, exhibitions, and content everywhere.

Why are you participating in the iF Design Marathon 2021?

I love the concept — a global celebration of design! When COVID changed everything and we started producing our podcast, virtual events, online exhibitions, etc — we found that our community grew beyond the United States. Almost overnight we had attendees at our events from Ireland, Iraq, Uganda, South Korea, and more. I love that design is a universal language for us all to connect, and the Design Marathon is a great framework for that shared design conversation.

Let’s take a look into the future: In your opinion, in which design discipline will be the biggest innovation?

I think it’s a combination of design fields that create experiences that inspire and delight us in the real world. We’ve all spent over a year at home or social-distancing, and I’m excited to see how designers can create physical experiences — that blend tangible and digital elements — that make us go “wow.” These could be exhibitions or entertainment or some mix of both.
