Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) uses remedies derived from many endangered plants and animals. We designed book sleeves illustrating 3 endangered species endemic to Taiwan used in TCM. Our title “Bu Xiao Xin” is a triple homophonic pun. The most common meaning Bu Xio Xin is “not careful” – if humans are not careful and continue killing animals for their own use, the endangered species may die out. In addition, the sound “Bu” can mean “book” as well as “cloth.” All 3 meanings of the title are incorporated into our design work. Our book sleeve design is a symbol for protecting valued books as well as valued endangered animals.
