People usually press the back of blade by the left thumb as they pare the pencil. It is uncomfortable when the thumb press the back of sharp blade, and sometime the thumb is injured. Stretch the part of the knife handle will protect the thumb effectively. In addition, it can make the thumb push blade better and with less pressure.
