bioluminescent field / interactive lightinstallation

bioluminescent field
bioluminescent field

The installation 'bioluminescent field' deals with the question how to design with biological performative material. It focuses on bioluminescent organisms (single celled dinoflagellates) that emit light when stimulated.

The cells can be considered biological sensors giving visual feedback in form of light when being stimulated by movement. The installation is a field of delicate stems that carry glass vials filled with dinoflagellates. Any person walking through the installation will trigger movements that stimulate the cells to emit light, hence, leaving ephemeral traces of blue light in space. (diploma thesis, 2009)
