The design process of the tripod chair is based on systematical research about inherent material properties and their exploitation for a design of so called surface-knots. Therefore the artefact is a result of a material-orientated design process. Connecting semi-finished products like wooden legs and a seat with an individual designed freeform surface-knot was the main idea, that means to use inherent material properties as a design strategy. In conclusion the development of a variable production mould with elastic films allows a fast and various production of surface-knots with complex but optimised geometries without using CAD-software.
