The dilemma of the contemporary museum is apparent even from the title: „Capital. Blue Chips & Masterpieces“. It presents the increasing importance of art’s market value in addition to its aesthetic value. This severely complicates the museums’ efforts to acquire masterpieces for their collections. If they succeed against the odds, as it happened in this case, they may self-confidently state that a slice of “capital” has been secured for the public. The hatchet, which was sent out as an invitation, derives from the exhibited work, yet it also alludes to the cutthroat competition in a globalised art market, flooded with ever more capital.
