Leading Through Crisis / Education via radio in Benin

After Batonga paused its in-person girls’ clubs for COVID-19 safety reasons, Batonga staff knew they needed to find a new way to engage, educate, and empower girls. Batonga began weekly radio broadcasts delivering educational content to rural Benin on topics like COVID-19 transmission, domestic violence prevention, and financial literacy, recorded by Batonga’s local, female Mentors. Not only have we been able to maintain high levels of girls’ listenership (up to 87% of them listen regularly) and positive feedback on content, we have also found that radio is an excellent tool for positive parent and community engagement.
