Yolk / Cosmetics

1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted globally each year and cosmetic filtering of ugly fruits and vegetables is one of the key causes. Inspired by how ancient Egyptians create makeup from natural materials, Yolk is a line of organic cosmetics made from ugly food. Discarded produce are collected, dehydrated and grinded before the pigments are added to organic substances such as arrowroot starch to create biodegradable, powder eye shadow that can last up to a year with proper care. This transformation highlights the potential, value of ugly food and also suggests a sustainable channel to reduce the amount of produce that ends up in landfills.
