Bio-inspired Splint

Inspired by the joints of insect wings, we designed a supportive, but mobile, splint that can be used for prevention of hyperextension injuries. By restricting the mobility of a limb, it could also be used as a support device to treat less severe medical issues, such as sprain, strain, or even for the recovery after cast removal. In contrast to the existing casts and splints, our splint, does not restrict wrist function and is made of a biodegradable material (PLA). Considering that the conventional casts and splints are not recyclable, our splint, which is made of a biodegradable material, will prevent more than 670,000 kg waste per year.
