Haptics of Cooking
Cooking utensils for the blind
Haptics of Cooking is a series of kitchen tools designed by the experience of touch for people who are blind. Only from the perspective of a seeing person might these tools seem unusable. However, it is an inventive approach to improve the independence of blind living. The goal of this project is to shorten the distance between the daily experience of seeing and blind people, most importantly questioning the monopoly of vision and developing tools that show how "seeing" is not just visual.
"Haptics of cooking" is a set of products for the visually impaired to aid their experience of cooking through the use of touch. All of the products in the set make use of natural materials and are beautifully considered for the use of a blind cook – this is clearly communicated in the poster and video. I would encourage the designer to include more detail about their choice of materials and their sustainability, but other than this criticism, this is a wonderful example of a product for good health and wellbeing!
WINNER STATEMENTWinning with both of my projects means a lot to my career. It's a great response to the initiative behind this project – that we need to question the boundaries of visual perception. Compassion is necessary in design to ensure the inclusion of all people.
