Recent studies have shown a notable increase of head-related injuries for surfers (Dean, 2018). Concussions can have deadly consequences because of the increased risk of drowning where the surfer may be confused, disoriented, or unconscious. Even a few seconds of unconsciousness can be fatal if there’s nobody around to rescue you. The design team sought to use their wearable technology expertise to find a solution that could help reduce surfer fatality in a way that doesn’t hinder them from doing what they love. OBEX is a surf hood with integrated sensors that activate a life-saving inflatable bladder when the surfer experiences a bad fall.
