iF DESIGN TALENT AWARD_02 2020

iF DESIGN TALENT AWARD_02 2020

This design turns the classic surgical mask into a more user-friendly product. It reminds the user to change the mask regularly and prevents them from using it repeatedly. Using a specially designed water-sensitive dye, different patterns appear on the surface of the mask depending on the amount of water absorbed as the dye reacts with water vapor from the wearer's breath. In this way, it can roughly measure the length of time the mask has been worn.

This is a timely solution, and I would like to see how circular principles can be thought through at the end-of-use. There will be tonnes of single-use masks filling landfills and the oceans, so the designers should think about the lifespan of the design. On a positive note, the solution is novel and whimsical in an otherwise anxiety-inducing and insecure time.
