Kaloum Bankhi / Design for slum communities

Kaloum Bankhi
Kaloum Bankhi

In the slums of Kaloum in Conakry, Guinea, there is an affordable housing shortage, leading family members to sleep in shifts to accommodate everyone in the household. In response, Kaloum Bankhi collaborated with local residents to develop a phased financial and construction model that allows homeowners to upgrade their homes in modules at their own pace while remaining in their homes. Clients save 50% of the phase’s cost (about $250), and are loaned the remainder from Kaloum Bankhi. This grassroots approach leverages existing sociocultural savings systems, empowers the community, provides employment, and can improve resident well-being.
