In Myanmar’s Northern Rakhine, institutionalized discrimination and inequality have caused ethnic conflicts based on land, economic opportunities, and religion.
6 Community Learning Centers were built in mixed-ethnic village tracts, and are co-managed by surrounding communities’ leaders. We set up computers, internet, books, a TV, etc.; and use the centers to host classes for out-of-school girls; conduct skills and vocational trainings open to all ethnic and social groups; and organize community talks. Dialogue, learning, and reconciliation are facilitated for 5 years, leading to a handover of the Centers’ ownership to communities themselves.
