Guarding Trees With Data / Deforestation monitoring

Every year an area of rainforest equivalent to the size of the UK is lost. Rainforest Connection (RFCx) tackles the problem by installing acoustic monitoring systems that detect illegal activities in forests. With the help of local partners, RFCx has placed over 60 “Guardians” -- upcycled cellphones fitted with solar panels -- in canopies high above forest floors worldwide. The units use AI to separate forest sounds from chainsaws and other signs of criminal acts. Over the next two years, RFCx aims to expand its coverage an additional 6,000 kilometers, the equivalent of taking 6 million cars off the road.
