Comolevi City Project / Cooling City, Place Making

Comolevi Fractal Shade is developed for the sun-shade to mitigate urban heat island (UHI) and it is a biomimicry design coping the tree's cooling effect. The shade is installed in the Yokohama waterfront, which has UHI and the place is not allowed to plant trees. The City Council had an experiment for the cooling effect. The test showed that the shade reduced 2 degrees Celsius of air temp. And the temperature of pavement became 10-20 degrees Celsius cooler than before. The cool place gathered more than 1,000 people who stayed 8 hours in hot summer. The shade mitigated UHI and the cool space activated people's activity at the same time.
