A 2019 report by the Governors Highway Safety Association estimated that 6,227 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in 2018, the most in almost three decades. The report cited "the large growth in smartphone use" as a possible reason. Research indicates that the importance of cues of being watched, and hence reputational concerns, on human cooperative behaviour. Limelight is designed to use the characteristics of light focus, so that people can become the focus when they use their mobile phones while walking. When ”Phubber” finds himself in focus, he automatically puts down the phone to ensure the safety of crossing the road.
