The Energy Tile was developed in collaboration with the local energy provider Umeå Energi. During the field study it became apparent that the daily peaks in energy usage are a big problem, especially during breakfast and around dinner time. Managing the sudden and varied energy loads puts a big strain on the grid, which wears down equipment. This also drives up the prices of electricity. Furthermore, Umeå Energi wanted to be closer to their customers and make them aware of the hard work going into having a world class power grid. These two problems were solved by storing energy by integrating used electric car batteries locally in the grid.
