Rural Revitalization with Creative Travel Program / Adaptive Reuse Design for a landmark bldg in Japan

Rural towns in Japan are facing steep population decline, resulting in abandoned properties and under-utilized facilities. Inami is a 600-year old craft town, home to 100+ wood carvers. Preservation of historic building was ruled out when government decided to bail-out in up-keeping Inami Art Museum. We met with the Mayor, proposed inviting US architecture students to conduct design & cultural research, provide innovative building re-use ideas for the community. Adaptive Reuse Design is a new discipline in Japan. This is a community + experiential travel initiative, promoting cultural sustainability. We hope to trigger more similar movement.
