Khanyisa / ''to ignite'' a love of reading

The Khanyisa programme involves placing trained, unemployed school leavers in Gr 2 or 3 classrooms where they are exclusively used as reading partners to the children. The objective of this programme is to assist teachers in establishing a culture of reading by increasing access to storybooks and making reading a daily practice thus increasing their fluency, accuracy and confidence. We have established classroom reading corners in 129 classrooms to date and over the last three years we have reached 5720 children. We found strong evidence that children's motivation and confidence in reading increased.
