The Open Medical Record System (OpenMRS) collaborative began informally in 2004 to support the information needs of health systems strengthening initiatives in Western Kenya, Eastern Rwanda, Central Peru, and KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. From its origins as a shared electronic medical record system supporting patient care in these settings, OpenMRS has grown into a broad, grassroots open source project with at least 3.000 contributing participants and implementations hosted in at least sixty-four countries worldwide.
