At least 100 million tons of sewage are dumped into China's rivers every day, half of which are polluted, one-third of which are unfit for fish and all kinds of aquatic life, and 40 percent of which are no longer drinkable. About one-third of China's industrial wastewater and more than 90 percent of its domestic sewage is discharged into water without treatment each year. As a result, many river sections have now lost their fish and shrimp populations, and groundwater and seawater are being seriously polluted to varying degrees. Protecting our water resources and ecological environment is our shared obligation and responsibility.
