The Kololo Biowaste to Energy Initiative (KOBIEN) is a waste to energy initiative generating biogas (a clean fuel) mainly from the school food wastes. The gas is cleaned, stored and sold to the school to facilitate it's science laboratory operations. The project is managed by a team of students who collect organic waste in the school and the surrounding areas and feed it to a biodigester. The waste-slurry produced (a very rich organic fertilizer) is used to enhance vegetable growth which is later sold to the community. The project in addition to generating income, its used as a demonstration facility on energy management and efficiency.
