MealFlour partners with local Guatemalan organizations to teach families how to raise mealworms, a more affordable and environmentally sustainable source of protein. The goal is to empower communities to reduce chronic malnutrition which is affecting more than 40% of children under-5. Because we teach families how to process the mealworms into a powder, they can easily incorporate the extra protein into the foods they already make. Mealworm powder is 55% protein and growing mealworms is simple. The farms can be made from upcycled materials such as jerry cans and the mealworms eat food scraps like banana peels as well as oats, bran, or flour.
