In the foothills of the Himalayas, in the northeastern state of Sikkim, India, St Xavier's English Medium School perches with its co-ed classrooms, dormrooms, narrow playground and garden, tucked among the houses of the small, steep roadside village of Tikjuk. Founded almost 20 years ago by Chandra Yonzon, who at the age of 16 first opened the school to improve the lives of the disadvantaged children around her, St. Xavier's has been a consistent educational, community, and civic pillar for area children in need, regardless of background, religion or means, who range in age from 2 to 14 years old, and today are over 40 strong and growing.
