In Zen, enso is a circle that is hand-drawn to express a moment when the mind is free. By analysing the waterfront of japanese temples as well as in the urban spaces of the waterside city of Kiel we developed a new definition of the boundary between water and shore. A part of the shore subtly breaks off creating a temporary island, drifting away slowly – nearly imperceptible. It has a cognitive impact as tension between natural and artificial objects attracts the visitors of the Olympic Games, bringing them closer to the climax of the competition. After the occasion Tokyo‘s residents will continue to benefit from this unique experience.
