Barefoot Solar Initiative

iF SOCIAL IMPACT PRIZE 2017

More than 1.2 billion people across the world live without access to electricity. They rely on harmful traditional fuels, impacting the health of women most of all. In partnership with rural communities, Barefoot College recruits 35 to 55-year-old illiterate and semi-literate women and trains them to be Solar Engineers. These women return to their communities to build, install and maintain solar equipment. Every Barefoot engineer is TRAINED TO TRAIN: a skillset that empowers her with an ability to scale her own knowledge without limitation. They are the catalysts for sustainable economic growth based on a platform of sustainable power.

Training women in rural communities to serve their communities as solar technicians – what a brilliant concept! This initiative builds communities from within, reduces emissions and empowers women in families and societies.
