The book Schwarz. Wald. Land. (Black. Forest. Land.) is an unadulterated tribute to the power of the color black, looking to concrete images of the famed mountainous region known simply as the Black Forest. In the visual language of the photographer Joseph Carlson, the forest becomes a wellspring of symbolic, meditative and atmospheric images that draw on the expressive potential of black and white photography. From the design and photography to the juxtaposition of images to the typography, the entire book captures the movement and rhythm of the forest, allowing the images and their motifs to fully resonate. Primal and uncompromising, the color black is the life force that pervades every page of this work.
