Discipline: Product

Most cities in the world now have bicycle rental schemes, but usually users don't have any head protection.

Now a regular user can order and customise a “Shell” helmet when they register to use the bicycle rental scheme. To give users more incentive to use the helmet, they are rewarded with a credit bonus for every mile they cycle with the helmet.

The “Shell” helmet is made of coated, recycled cardboard, which can come in many different styles and colours. The lining of the helmet is a nylon strap, which is detachable so it can be washed. The padding is a lining of cork to give that extra protection when needed.

I like the different approach to shock absorption through destruction of material.
Jury Statement
When I heard the news of winning the iF STUDENT DESIGN AWARD 2016, I was overjoyed. I could not have asked for a better outcome. Since receiving the news, I have felt a sense of pride that all my hard work has been worthwhile.
