The Cardboard Soapbox Racer is designed for children aged 8-12, who are digital natives. The low cost and low investment qualities of the kitset construction toy aim to give children greater opportunities using low tech media. The Racers cardboard shell and timber base are cut from a minimal waste pattern, teaching children about waste management while reducing manufacturing costs. As children build the Cardboard Soapbox Racer, they build an understanding of how things work. The assembly and customisation process builds on the child's confidence of making’ through play. Ultimately it is the journey that is more rewarding then the destination.
