bridgingMZAMBA
Suspension Bridge
The project bridgingMZAMBA arose out of the desire of the local Xhosa for having a safe crossing over the river Mzamba in South Africa. In the rainy season, the whole community is cut off from necessary infrastructure, health care and general food supply and kids have already drowned on their way to school. The design and implementation of this bridge is the diploma thesis of T. Harlander & F. Anzenberger and was build in South Africa in cooperation with the NGO buildcollective. Given the difficult accessibility of the valley, all pieces had to be carried manually and assembled on site, together with local residents.
We were very impressed by all the effort that went into this project. Despite the fact that the materials were brought in manually, the technologies used already existing and the workers all local, the elegant appearance of the new structure had us convinced. It also solves a very real problem. Very well done!
WINNER STATEMENTWe very much appreciate the iF STUDENT DESIGN AWARD 2016 and want to thank all sponsors and especially our local workers and friends in the mzamba-river region in South-Africa, who have helped to make our ideas and dreams come true. Thank you very much!
