SAMBA HIV test for Africa / HIV treatment monitoring

SAMBA HIV test for Africa
SAMBA HIV test for Africa

SAMBA is an iF design award winning point-of-care diagnostic system that enables HIV testing in remote areas of Africa. Highly complex nucleic acid testing has been simplified and ruggedised to enable early diagnosis of babies from HIV-infected mothers and to monitor drug resistance in HIV-infected individuals. Currently, effective HIV treatment in sub-Saharan Africa and prevention of onward transmission is hampered by the lack of much needed diagnostic tests whose complexity requires the shipping of patient samples to centralised laboratories, leading to long delays and loss of 30-70% in follow-up. SAMBA testing overcomes these limitations.

The jury was impressed with the efficiency of this test. However, it is ‘only’ a refinement of an existing diagnostic tool and therefore lacks innovative potential.
