In Uganda, water resources are limited. People used to drink water coming from a very heavy filter made of cement or stone. The bio-sand filter is a modified form of the traditional slow sand filter: the bio-sand filters can be built on a smaller scale and can be operated intermittently. These modifications make the bio-sand filter suitable for use at home or in small groups. The new design is portable and can be carried by women and children. It is sustainable in its manufacturing and life cycle. The material is waterproof and the fabric is bio-degradable.
