Water is necessary for survival. In most emergency and disaster situations, including earthquakes, mass movements, floods, and droughts, potable water becomes a rare resource. Many victims perish from simple dehydration, or drinking from contaminated water supplies. In such dire circumstances, there is a use for a water filtration system or device to provide for sustenance. Ideally, such a device should be designed to be portable, makeshift, and can be easily assembled out of materials that are simple, durable and accessible.
