Kattu / fishing and trading boat

Kattu
Kattu

The concept design Kattu is a fishing and trading boat for people in Sri Lanka. It can easily and cheaply be built by its users directly on a beach. The materials needed are native wood, concrete and rope. All these materials are available locally and no additional skills are required.
The hull is hollow and equipped with slots transport boxes. The outer wall is 2cm thick and the evaporation of sea water inside provides natural cooling.
The bridge between the two parts of the hull stabilizes the ship. It is a simple construction of cross-secting planks tied together with rope. This is a traditional technique used in Sri Lanka.
