Song Jiang Jhen Array, one of Taiwan Battle Arrays. It combines arts troups and martial troupes. In the pioneering days of Qing dynasty Taiwan, villages or clan groups formed martial groups from local youths and farmers to take protection matters into their own hands. Nowadays it's purely performance that perform martial arts at festivals, parades or competitions.
There're lots of battle arrays in temple parades. Song Jiang Jhen is the most frequently performed. With the highest number of performers, it demonstrates Taiwanese’s energy. It's a representative form of grassroots folk art. In short, it's the epitome of Taiwan grassroots culture
