Sometimes, it just needs a few clicks to success. We are happy to share the story of the Dutch design agency VanBerlo and the world’s leading fuel meter manufacturer, Liquid Controls LLC, who successfully collaborated thanks to the iF WORLD DESIGN GUIDE. They came in contact via the iF website, created the meter register and data controller LCR.iQ and won an iF DESIGN AWARD 2019 together!
Wow! But how did this happen?
VanBerlo is a frequent participant of the iF DESIGN AWARDS and has received several awards working together with a variety of clients. Besides a seal for top notch design, winning the iF DESIGN AWARDS has proven to be a fruitful source of new businesses for the design agency. This is where Liquid Controls comes in: In his pursuit of innovation on the existing portfolio, Dan Clevenger, Product Manager and UX lead at Liquid Controls, saw this as an opportunity to improve on legacy designs that have been prevalent in the industry for decades.
As a follower of iF DESIGN AWARDS, he found VanBerlo amongst the top agencies on the iF world design guide website to consider partnering with on a new project. As a traditional engineering and manufacturing company, user-centric industrial design disciplines were not heavily considered in the past, and Liquid Controls set out to change that paradigm. “This story is a beautiful example of how iF aims to connect the world of business with the world of design”, emphasizes iF CEO Ralph Wiegmann.
Fast forward: The client and design agency turned out to be a perfect fit. As Strategy and Innovation Director Ivo Lamers puts it: “they jointly look at design from a very holistic point of view”. VanBerlo brings together sharp user insights with the most advanced tech, whilst still preserving a strong focus on profitable business. For example, in the development of the LCR.iQ, user research helped to drive simplification of operation of the register in a variety of environments while the UI incorporates the latest digital intelligence along with legacy design elements that are consistent with the Liquid Controls brand.
In the end, the process came full circle as the new LCR.iQ was chosen to receive an iF DESIGN AWARD 2019. “This recent breakthrough opens the door for future collaboration between traditional manufacturing companies and the world of industrial design,” unlocking new potential in this territory for VanBerlo.
