A walking stick for elderly people with an integrated phone and digital medication info was a design innovation back in 2003. This extraordinary student concept was – of course – honored with an iF DESIGN TALENT AWARD in its time. We at iF are proud to share one of the most amazing talent success stories – the story of Junggi Sung, who came all the way from aspiring design student to a remarkable design career and finally an iF jury member!
The E-Stick has the shape of a walking stick for older people and features an integrated digital communications and entertainment function. The clou: If the E-Stick is inserted into its charger, then data can be downloaded while its batteries are charging – this could be anything from favorite music, emergency contacts or medication info. Back in 2003, when smartphones were not even or at least an idea, Sung’s student concept for the Kookmin University, Seoul, was what can be called a true innovation.
“The E-stick was meant to go into production but was put on a hold due to other projects”, said Sung, today a designer for Daylight in San Francisco. “The iF DESIGN TALENT AWARD has opened many doors for me as a young designer and paved the way for my career!”
First award, then wanted young designer: Junggi started off right after winning the award at LG Electronics, then IDEO and later Lunar Design. Since 2013 he is creative director of Daylight. He was honored with numerous awards worldwide, among the one iF DESIGN AWARDS in 2008 and 2015, and an iF gold award in 2012 and 2015.
