For iF, promoting visionary concepts created by upcoming designers is a matter of heart. Every year, we honor outstanding designs created by students from all over the world with the iF DESIGN TALENT AWARD. We strongly believe in the potential of young designers to change and innovate. We want to find out: What became of our young talents?
Miriam Aust and Sebastian Amelung received their iF Awards for their final project in 2014, a floor lamp, and are busy as furniture, interior and exhibition designers for various companies and projects from their headquarter in Kassel, Germany. We asked them what motivated them back then, what happened since then and, of course: What became of their awarded lamp design?
A&A: The standing lamp a “floor lamp” was one of our first free designs together! As young graduates we were looking for design awards and competitions back then. And of course, iF was on our list!
A&A: A floor lamp is an object lamp, which we worked on very intensely to develop a very own design language. It was one of our first projects together that we realized without an assignment by a client. We were very happy about the award and also surprised, because there were so many applicants from all around the world.
Being honored with an award is always a validation that you are on the right way as a designer!
A&A: Being honored with an award is always a validation that you are on the right way as adesigner! It has pushed our confidence and passion to continue working as designers.
A&A: Our student project a floor lamp is currently being produced and sold by the Italian label COVO. Today we mostly work together with different companies on our designs – which gives our own work a completely new dimension. We are pleased if the draft we make communicates our design attitude and the profile of our clients at the same time.
A&A: We work together as a team of two, where everybody has his/her own strengths and talents. The process of drafting and designing is similar to a ping pong match: From the hand draft to CAD (Computer-Aided-Design) to a model and back. It is not until we are both entirely satisfied with the result that we pass the draft!
