Service Design Solutions for the Real World

When it comes to putting people first, iF awarded automated delivery systems, urban revitalization projects and Co. are models for future service design.

When we look at our immediate environment, there’s often room for improvement for reinventing run-out services and creating new ones – whether it's the way the postal system works, with which devices we communicate with each other or how traditional classrooms are built. And especially in unpredictable changing times like this – with the Coronavirus pandemic and lockdown restrictions – we are craving for solutions which contribute to a better society and are smart enough to adapt to user’s wishes. The best service designers keep coming up with creative ideas aimed at making life easier for people. And again at this year’s iF DESIGN AWARD, the great and good of the service design world gather under one roof.

The iF DESIGN AWARD 2021 winning entries in this discipline are a model for future design. What they have in common is the people-centric approach, putting people first, understanding what they need and what they want. The rising interest of manufacturers and designers in this kind of design thinking is reflected in the iF DESIGN AWARD statistics: The number of submitted entries has increased dramatically in the discipline Service Design since it was first introduced five years ago. Lots of award winning entries refer to creative solutions in the digital sphere benefiting from ever-evolving technological innovations in artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality. But how about solutions for "real" world?

Many of this year's products, applications and concepts approach the issue of economic, ecological and social sustainability in both the health and service sector. For example, the question is whether service can be made more sustainable through savings or the use of certain materials. The self-service mailbox "Cainiao IoT Self-service mailbox" pushes into this direction since it ensures contactless handling in times when the stay in a larger public has become risky. Or take "Foodrop System", a fully automated restaurant delivery system also ensuring safety during a pandemic. In the health sector, "Health Mobility" is among those inspiring service concepts: Delivering on-demand primary care services to rural communities could be solved by a healthcare vehicle equipped with monitoring, teleconsultation and medication services. All these current projects reflect the ongoing need for exceptional service design – by tackling a sense of community building and sustainability.

Design Movement on Campus | Manufacturer: Taiwan Design Research Institute, Taipei, Taiwan With this iF gold awarded project an innovative brand of aesthetic education is built. It aims to nurture students' aesthetic sense through design and further offeres the design industry an opportunity to improve public aesthetics, addressing aesthetic issues through specific actions (see image above).

If we direct our attention to home assistance services, we come across products combining the latest technology innovations, such as "Robot Partner", a learning robot for autistic children to communicate verbally and non-verbally, or "Grande AI - Accessible Washer & Dryer", an AI-powered washing machine that makes the often-dreaded household chore as easy as possible while being more sustainable thanks to automated water and detergent use.

The human-centered design approach is further demonstrated by the award-winning entries on the subject of education. Take the "Sojeho Project", for instance. This is about a former railroad site being transformed into an amazing landmark that attracts tourists to an otherwise unappreciated region and teaches culture and history. "Aux Magazine" pursues a different teaching mission since it brings music education to prisoners. Not to forget the gold award-winning project "Design Movement on Campus" which aims to nurture students’ aesthetic sense through design. Ultimately, it’s always about enriching our daily lives, privately and professionally, to focus on what matters: a good life to the best of our ability.
