Goodbye, Munich – hello Berlin! After 8 years in Munich, the iF design award night 2020 will take place in THE creative metropolis and UNESCO City of Design – BERLIN. On 4 May 2020, the excellence of design
will celebrate in one of Berlin's cultural and historical landmarks – the legendary Friedrichstadt-Palast.
Berlin is the perfect home for this special night of the award winners. And here, we should put an emphasis on “feeling at home with design”: The creative community of the city is growing rapidly. As the latest numbers show: Berlin has 4,400 design companies working in the fields of industrial, product, fashion, graphic and communication design and 12,700 employees in the design sector. More than 195,000 people are working in creative businesses, which is 10 percent of the all employees in Berlin’s creative industries (2016).
There are five arts universities and numerous privately funded institutions in Berlin which offer a wide range of design-oriented educational opportunities. Thanks to these infrastructures, the city is home to more than 5,000 design students. With events and fairs like the fashion week or design week, Berlin is continuously the capital of design.
No wonder, the UNESCO named Berlin “UNESCO City of Design” and included Berlin in the “Creative Cities Network”.
For a hundred years now, the theater has been known as Berlin’s number one address for big show entertainment. From 1924, the newly-appointed artistic director, Erik Charell, created the revues that characterize the reputation and aesthetics of the “Golden Twenties” in Berlin to this day. In 1980, the old Palast had to be closed due to major subsidence and structural damage to the building.
On 27 April 1984, the new Palast opened at Friedrichstraße 107. It was the last major grand construction project of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The biggest names in show business have been on the stage at this legendary theater, like Shirley Bassey, Joe Cocker, Phil Collins and Liza Minnelli.
